Akhmatova should be read to the end. Her whole oeuvre, interpreted in the light of her last, monumental works – first of all the play Enuma Elish and Poem Without a Hero – seems underlain by a sense of the absurd, with irony setting the tone and poetics ruled by the grotesque. The author of the Requiem and Northern Elegies shared the tragic fate of her people in the era of war and terror. She has left a poetic testimony to the turbulent times and the greatness of 20th-century Russian avant-garde literature.
The present volume features the most comprehensive selection of Akhmatova's poetry so far published in Poland. The prose of her diaries has largely remained unknown: self-revelatory and sharp, animated by sensitivity and passion, these pages overflow with vivid images of situations, places, and people. Her way of portraying Modigliani and Mandelstam is captivating and the reader will be intrigued by her only play Enuma Elish.
The volume's innovative editorial formula complements Akhmatova's texts with extensive notes and interpretive essays.
