Wojciech Fangor was born in 1922 in Warsaw. He made his debut in 1949 in the Young Artists and Scientists Club in Warsaw. At the end of the nineteen-forties and early fifties he was creating paintings in the socialist realism convention. In 1961, he left Poland. He spent the years 1962 - 1964 in Paris. Then in 1964 - 1965, he worked in West Berlin with a grant from the Ford Foundation. From 1966 till 1999 he lived in the United States, where he lectured at among other venues the Farleigh Dickinson University in Madison, N.J. and Harvard University's Graduate School of Design, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Beginning in the nineteen-sixties, he created paintings representing coloured circles and waves with amorphous, vibrating contours in which, on the principle of contrasts and complements, he achieved an impression of motion. In these he generates the effects of afterimages and the flickering of light, bringing colours close to individual, diffracted light waves. In the mid nineteen-seventies, fascinated by the world of mass culture and its concomitant illusions, the artist returned to figurative painting. Since 1999, Wojciech Fangor has lived permanently in Poland.
