Artur Nacht-Samborski. A Touch of Abstraction

October 11, 2007 - December 07, 2007

This exhibition is an exceptional opportunity to acquaint oneself with the, so far unknown to the wider public, abstract themes in the work by Artur Nacht-Samborski - one of the classics of Polish modern art. The artist, recognised first and foremost as the author of still lifes with rubber plants, nudes, and portraits, also created non-representative works, although these are deeply rooted in reality. The majority of his colourful painting compositions, being a personal record of the artist's method of seeing, are supported by organic and expressive forms. This exhibition will also be an opportunity to see the few drawings and compositions of a constructivist origin that have been saved.

The exhibition encompasses over seventy works, including oils, watercolours, gouaches and drawings, most of which are the property of the artist's family and come from the deposit at the National Museum in Poznan.

Accompanying the exhibition will be a richly illustrated catalogue with text by Prof. Waldemar Baraniewski, an introduction by Krzysztof Musiał, as well as text by Hanna Sachs and Roman Wachs that brings us closer to Artur Nacht-Samborski as a man, family member and artist. Biographical notes on the painter's life and works have been drawn up by Aleksander Miklaszewski.

Artur Nacht-Samborski was born in 1898 in Krakow, and died in 1974 in Warsaw. He studied at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts under the direction of Józef Mehoffer and Wojciech Weiss, then later with Felicjan Szczęsny-Kowarski and Józef Pankiewicz. The artist is numbered among the most prominent Polish colourists from the Paris Committee group. He was a professor at the Gdansk State Higher School of Fine Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In 1959, the artist's paintings were presented at the Venice Biennale.
