Wojciech Fangor. Palimpsest

January 13, 2010 - February 27, 2010

The exhibition at the aTAK Gallery continues the theme of the artist's recent works in which he returns to his drawings made decades ago and transposes them into the medium of painting. The Palimpsest exhibition showcases a new stage in his re-interpretation of drawing which used to perform an auxiliary function but here it has been given priority: Fangor has made his oil paintings follow his earlier studies on paper thus reversing the usual sequence and hierarchy. He has made painting assume the costume of drawing. The brush and black oil pigment pay homage to the lines drawn with a marker or pen while patches of oil colours mimic those once executed with colour pencils or watercolours on paper. This 'artistic lifting', the putting on of a new painterly skin over the old drawings, is referred to in the exhibition's title: The Palimpsest. It suggests the process of rejuvenation, of obliterating and partial screening of the old contents to introduce new substance and new readings. The exhibition presented at the aTAK Gallery (13 January – 27 February 2010) features some 30 paintings. Its accompanying catalogue designed by Wojciech Fangor is forthcoming.

Exhibition conception: Stefan Szydłowski.
